Brief History

THE HISTORY OF FIP UNY

In the beginning, Faculty of Education of Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (FIP UNY) was Pedagogical Section of Faculty of Literature, Pedagogics and Philosophy of Gadjah Mada University (FSPF UGM) Yogyakarta. Gajah Mada University (Universitit Negeri Gadjah Mada) was established on December 19, 1949 based on Government Regulation Number 23 Year 1949, the Provisional Regulation concerning Merging the Higher Education into University.

The date and legal support of "Pedagogical Section" became part of the UGM Faculty of Literature, Pedagogy and Philosophy are not known yet. Legally, the existence of this Pedagogic Section was confirmed by Government Regulation Number 37 Year 1950 dated August 14, 1950.

The analog of “Gatutkaca” who was born with the name “Jabang Tetuka”, the Senate of the Faculty of Education agreed to publish the "birthday" of the Faculty of Education UNY ("Gatutkaca"). This name was adopted from the birth of "Jabang Tetuka" (Pedagogic Section), not the name of "Gatutkaca" (Faculty of Education or Faculty of Pedagogics UGM). Therefore, it is known that August 14, 1950 (the existence of the Pedagogic Section of Faculty of SPF UGM) is the birthday of Faculty of Education of UNY. This understanding was legalized through the Decree of the Dean of FIP UNY dated December 23, 2010.

In the Annual Report of Universitit Negeri Gadjah Mada 1951/1952, page 17 is stated that the opening lecturing of the UGM Faculty of Literature, Pedagogics and Philosophy was held on January 23, 1951. Due to various situations in the country at that time, the lectures did not conduct even though the juridical section of the Pedagogical Section and the Faculty of SPF UGM had been established.

The report also states that starting March 1, 1952, the Faculty of SPF UGM was integrated into the Physical Education Academy as "Baccalaureat Lessons for Physical Education."

Furthermore, based on the Decree of the Minister of Education, Teaching and Culture, dated May 28, 1953, the Faculty of SPF UGM received an additional Center for Education and Designer of Education and Teaching.

In the Annual Report of the State University of Gadjah Mada 1953/1954, page 9, dated September 19, 1954 was stated that the SPF Faculty was divided into some majors, including Eastern Literature, Western Literature, History, Earth Sciences, Physical Education, and Pedagogics.

Starting on September 15, 1955 based on the Decree of the Minister of Education, Teaching and Culture Number 53759/Regulations on Completing the Structure of the Universitas Gadjah Mada, was published in the Annual Report of the President of Universitas Gadjah Mada for the academic year 1954/1955. It was stated that the SPF Faculty was divided into three faculties, namely (1) Faculty of Literature, (2) Faculty of Philosophy, and (3) Faculty of Education (in other reference, it is called as Faculty of Pedagogics).

Therefore, the current development of the Faculty of Education at UNY from the Pedagogic Section of the Faculty of SPF UGM starting on September 15, 1955, instead of September 19, 1955.

Since September 19, 1955 based on the Decree of the Minister of Education, Teaching and Culture of September 16, 1955 Number 33895/CIII, the heads of the faculties within UGM were appointed. Therefore, date September 19, which has been commemorated as the DAY OF THE BIRTH OF Faculty of Education of,UNY is the right day for the appointment of deans (faculty heads) within UGM. This decree was read by the Rector of UGM, Prof. Dr. Sardjito at UGM Open Senate Meeting on 19 September 1955.

Based on this determination, it is known that the Head of the Pedagogic Faculty (written as Faculty of Pedagogic, not Faculty of Educational Sciences) is Prof. Drs. A. Sigit.

Furthermore, by Decision of P.J.M. President Number 1/1963 and the Instructions of J.M. Minister of Higher Education and Science (P.T.I.P.) and Minister of Education, Teaching and Culture (PPK) Number 32 and 34 Year 1964 FIP UGM, FKIP UGM and the Institute of Teacher Education (IPG) Surakarta were merged into the Teacher Training and Education Institute (IKIP) Jogjakarta. Department of Psychology from FIP UGM separated itself and became a separate faculty within UGM. IKIP Jogjakarta was inaugurated by J.M. Minister of Higher Education and Science on May 21, 1964.
